Baby Things We Love At (Almost) 10 Months

I've been meaning to do one of these posts forever.  There are so many baby things we like and use all the time.  Allie will be 10 months in about a week.  Here are some things we love and have used a lot in the past few months:

We've had the most success with this sippy cup.  We have about 4 different kinds and Allie does best with a soft spout on these Nuk ones.  I feel like these a good transition from her bottles in terms of shape and size too (we use Dr. Browns).

Ever since we transitioned Allie out of the Merlin's Magic Sleep Suit (which we loved from 3-6 months), we've been using these over a sleeper to keep Allie warm at night.

We got Allie this cube at Target on a whim a couple months ago.  I had been thinking about getting her one, but was originally thinking I'd look for one on consignment.  I actually don't mind that we paid full price though, because this thing is really good quality and Allie plays with it all the time.  As soon as she could pull up to standing, it became one of her go to items to pull up on and play with the beads and critters on top.  She also likes all the different sides- opening and closing the doors, spinning the letters, etc.  I feel like we're still going to get a lot of use out of this when we start teaching her words and letters, etc...  It's a great cube.

We thought our time with the Wubbanub had to come to a close once Allie got into her Advent pacifiers, but after a bunch of bad nights of sleep in which we realized Allie was losing her pacifier in the crib at night and having a hard time finding it so we kept having to go into the nursery to give them to her, I got the idea to put her Wubbanubs in the crib with her so that she could easily find the pacifier attached and it worked great.  She was able to find them so much easier than her regular pacifier, and once she got the Wubbanub in her mouth she'd fall back asleep without us having to go in and find a paci for her.  Win!

Puffs/Mum Mums or Cheerios
We're finally at a place where we're fairly comfortable taking Allie with us out to lunch again (for a while she was pretty fussy and unpredictable so it was tough).  She's getting good at sitting in a high chair, and these are great for keeping her entertained while we wait for food or eat our food.  I also occasionally use them at home if I need a couple minutes to prep food for Allie and she's freaking out waiting for something to get on her tray.

Like I said, Allie is getting pretty good at sitting in a high chair, however, a lot of high chairs are missing straps or seem too big for her, and using this cover helps a lot in keeping her secured.  We've also used it in a shopping cart a bunch of times.

My friend Lindsay recommended this book and it's by far my favorite to read to Allie at bedtime.  It's not too long or too short, it rhymes, and I feel like the rhythm of the words is perfect for bedtime.  Allie also likes reaching out and touching the bunny on each page.  It's hard for a book to hold her attention at bedtime but she can usually make it through this one.

I absolutely LOVE these booties.  Allie isn't officially walking yet (she's getting close though!), so it's a little soon for normal harder soled baby shoes, but now that it's colder she can't go barefoot all the time either and socks don't stay on that well.  These are great.  We have two pairs in gray and pink and they stay on well and go with almost everything.  She wears them to daycare a lot and out and about.  They are also super cute and everyone comments on how cute they are.

I actually don't know if I would recommend this specific walker, but it's the one we have.  I was skeptical that Allie would do well in it and that we would have room for it without her crashing into things, even though we have a fairly good sized kitchen/downstairs.  It's actually exceeded my expectations.  She outgrew the Rock N Play and many other "holding devices" we have for her a couple months ago, and it's a life saver if I just need to pee for a second or need to keep her entertained for a few minutes while I'm cooking or something.  She can go both backwards and forwards in it, so she can back up and move in another direction if she gets into a corner or something.  I also think it's helping her learn to walk.

This isn't the one we have, I have a Sesame Street version I got at a consignment sale.  Allie really likes it though, and enjoys pushing, turning, and twisting the little knobs to get each guy to come out, then closing the doors.  My two year old niece was just here and enjoyed playing with it too.

If you have a baby Allie's age or older, what's a must have I should think about for the future?  I'm working on ideas for her Christmas and first birthday presents so I'm all ears!

Tagged!

Hideeeee Ho!  (bonus points if you know what that's from)

I was recently tagged by my buddy Erin, so I have a little question/answer thingie to go through for you guys. I'm not sure if this one is actually different from other ones I've done or if I got tagged again, but anyway, I'll do it.  I was also a little confused about whether I was just supposed to answer the questions she posed to us or all of the ones on her post, so you're getting the answers to all of them.  I figured, why not!

1. What’s one talent that you wish you had? I wish I could play the piano.  I was recently thinking about taking lessons actually. Maybe I will.

2. What’s your favorite drugstore makeup product, and your favorite high end makeup product?  I like the Almay Waterproof mascara.  I have pretty sensitive eyes and wear contacts, so I have a hard time finding something that won't irritate my eyes and this seems to work the best out of what I've tried.  I'm open to non-toxic mascara, but have yet to find a waterproof one.  I really need that waterproof stuff or I find the mascara comes off too easily and I get flakes of it under my eyes and stuff.  Sorry, longest explanation ever.  For high end, I guess Bare Minerals Mineral Veil or Clinique eye liner.  That's about as high end as I get.

3. What’s your favorite thing to blog/vlog about?  Hmm, well, if you read my blog, you can probably tell that I'm kind of all over the place with what I blog about.  It used to bother me that I didn't fit into one niche, but now I actually really enjoy the freedom of having sort of a "lifestyle" blog so I can blog about running, food, social activities, travel, being a pilot's wife, and my struggles trying to have a baby.  I kind of consider this my journal.

4. What’s your ideal Saturday?  Sleep til about 7-8am.  Snuggle with Clyde and Greg upon waking up.  Head out for a leisurely run in perfect weather.  Maybe go for a walk on the beach (in this fantasy I live near the beach) with both of them.  Lunch outside somewhere.  Something fun outside for the afternoon- maybe a wine festival or something in a park.  A really nice dinner out with friends or home on the deck with Greg.  Home in bed by 10pm, watching South Park with my boys.

5. Fondest childhood memory? Sailing with my family.  We had a little sailboat on a lake near where I grew up in NH (Spofford Lake).  We had a great time going sailing on the weekends in that little boat.

6. If you could only buy one makeup brand for the rest of your life, what would it be?  I guess Bare Minerals, but honestly, I'm not a huge make-up person.  (I think this question was more for Erin!)

7. How would your closest friends describe you?  Hmm.  I don't think it translates that well in my writing, but I'm actually kind of funny/witty in real life.  Also, reliable, loyal, strong (emotionally), and determined.

8. How would a stranger or acquaintance describe you?  Friendly.  I usually introduce myself first if I'm around someone I don't know and start asking them questions.  I like to grill people.  Usually in 10 minutes I know a lot of basic facts about someone.  It's probably the former cop in me...  :)

9. What did you study/are you studying/do you plan to study/wish you studied in college?  My major was Sociology and I had a minor in Criminology.  I don't really regret it.  I found the coursework extremely interesting and I probably wouldn't have done as well in college had I majored in anything else that didn't capture my attention span as well.

10. What’s the one makeup or beauty product that you can’t seem to get enough of?  Again, I think this one is really for Erin, but I guess I'd actually say lip gloss.  I really like the Victoria's Secret ones.  I have like 2 in each of my purses.  I got a Burt's Bees one that is similar, but it tastes kind of gross, so I admittedly like the VS ones better even though they are probably kind of toxic.

11. What’s the very first thing you do in the morning? Take Clyde out then shower.

Ok, so these are Erin's questions... (ie, the ones I was probably just supposed to answer).

1. If you could only use one beauty product for the rest of your life, what would it be?  See #6 above.

2. What is your favorite song of the moment?  Easy- Eric Church "Springsteen".  I have had it on repeat all day.

3. What blogs are your currently reading?  Check out my side bar, those are most of them.

4. Are you addicted to Pinterest?  No, actually, I'm not.  I sometimes hop on there and Pin stuff, but honestly, I don't have time to do it that often, and I'm not really that creative in terms of home decor, fashion, etc... so I think I don't find it as addicting/appealing as people who do and can visualize creatively.

5. Do you use non-toxic beauty and personal care products?  Yup, Erin has made me see the light.  I pretty much use all non-toxic shampoo/conditioner now (several kinds), hairspray, some make-up, moisturizer, night cream, body wash, etc...  I have some regular stuff too, but more non-toxic stuff than ever before.

6. What’s the last movie that you saw in the theater?  I saw Hunger Games with Sara last night!  It was awesome!

7. If you could raid one celebrity’s closet, whose would it be?  Probably Reese Witherspoon's.  She always looks classy, yet hot, and kind of classic.  That's what I'm going for.

8. What did you have for breakfast this morning?  I had a nectarine with Quaker Oat Squares cereal and milk.  And some green tea.

9. Did you used to play with your mother’s makeup as a child?  Yeah, sometimes.  I didn't put a full face of it on, but I remember trying her Cover Girl compact and lipstick.

10. What is your favorite way to get some exercise?  Running, duh.

11. Are you a cat person or a dog person? DOG, really?  Do you even have to ask??

I'll tag...

Looking Forward

I'm no expert on grief and dealing with it, but I suppose at this point I've had my fair share.  Yes, two miscarriages and a year of trying for a baby has caused me a lot of pain.  It's just not how I wanted all of this to go at all.  There have been a lot of tears and a lot of asking the universe "why?".  All I know is there is really nothing I can do to change what has happened.  All I can do is look to the future.  I am really hoping we get some answers and can move forward with our plans to have a family.  Til then, there are some things on the horizon to hopefully keep me sane and looking forward.

1.  Spring.  Spring is my favorite season.  I know we had a mild winter here in Charlotte, but today it just really felt like spring:  flowers blooming, birds chirping, warmer air...  It actually made me happy, despite all the pain.  Spring just seems to hold a lot of hope for me.  And it's sunroof weather, so that's always good.

2.  St. Paddy's Day.  It's coming up, and I suppose one thing good about not being pregnant, is that I can drink beer with my friends on one of my favorite holidays.

3.  A 10K.  I haven't done a 10K in since my Turkey Trot in 2010, so I thought this would be a good distance for me to shoot for in about a month.  I look forward to actually training for something again and a bunch of my friends are running the 10K or the half so I'll have some company.

4.  A family trip to Charleston in April.  My brother, sister-in-law, niece, my parents, Greg, Clyde, and I are renting a house near the beach.  I'm looking forward to spending time with them, especially my adorable niece.

5.  Coldplay concert this summer.  I have tickets to see them when they come to Charlotte!  Can't wait to see them again, they put on an awesome show!

6.  My friend Sarah's wedding in September.  She asked me to be a bridesmaid right before I found out I was pregnant and my due date was basically on top of the wedding, so attending, let alone being in the wedding was definitely up in the air.  Now I can commit to being in the wedding.

None of these things replace being pregnant with a baby, but right now, I just need things to look forward to, to keep me trucking along, and I think these things will all help with that.

My support network is great.  As I mentioned in my last post, my friends have really stepped up- checking on me, calling, sending texts, emails, edible treats, etc...  And you guys- my readers- give me hope every time one of you comments or tweets and tells me you are thinking of me.  Thank you guys so much for your kind words, thoughts, and prayers.  It really does mean a lot to me and help to know that I have all of you pulling for me.

Five Friday Favorites

Life is pretty routine for me lately.  Usually a typical day goes something like this:

-Morning routine (shower, breakfast, take Clyde out, do hair, get dressed, etc...)
-Work
-Come home
-Walk Clyde/exercise
-Make dinner
-Do house stuff (dishes, clean kitchen, laundry)
-Crash in front of TV
Being that I don't want to bore you guys to death with my somewhat mundane routine, that's left me without tons of blog content.  Even my meals have been kind of on the simple, uncreative side (hey, sometimes baked potatoes for dinner is where it's at).  I will say, that I'm happy and well, and still passionate about things.

Here's some of my favorite things lately.

1.  For breakfast, I've been really into blueberries, plain organic yogurt, Quaker oatmeal squares, and milk, together in a bowl.  You just layer them all together and enjoy.

I've had this for breakfast three times in a row this week, which is unheard of for me, because I usually like to mix up my breakfast options.  The combination of the tart blueberries with the sweet oatmeal squares and the creaminess of the yogurt, which is also kind of tart, is just awesome.  Try it!

2.  My natural beauty products.

clockwise from top right:  Nature's Gate Colloidal Oatmeal lotion, Mineral Fusion mascara, Burt's Bees night cream, and Avalon Organics essential mineral smoothing cleanser.

If you read Erin's blog, you know that this is something she's very passionate about- using and spreading knowledge about products that are natural.  Reading her posts definitely got me thinking about it, and I know use these products, plus non-toxic foundation, shampoo, and conditioner.  I also have non-toxic floor cleaner and other cleaning products.  I just think it's important to not be exposing yourself unnecessarily to toxic things if you can avoid it.

3.  This song:  Bon Iver - Halocene

I just think it's beautiful...

4.  Walks with Clyde (or which ever dogs are around).

I'm still not running a whole lot, but I have been walking really consistently, almost every day.  I just really enjoy the time outside and watching Clyde prance around all cute with his tongue hanging out, taking in nature.

5.  Parenthood.

This show is outstanding.  Half the time I'm cringing because the characters are doing something that's obviously going to get them into trouble, but a lot of the time I'm smiling because the show is touching.  If you're not watching it, I think you should be.

What are you into lately??

Valentine's Day Love Story

I saw this little love post floating around the blog world and thought I'd participate.

1. How long have you and your significant other been together?

We met and started dating 10 years ago.

The early years...

2. How did you meet? {What's your "love" story?}

Haha, Greg and I met online in a Yahoo chatroom.  Old school!  We cahtted a bit and then emailed each other a few times before setting up a date.  The first time we met in person was in Arlington, VA at the Ballston Mall.  We walked to a Mongolian BBQ restaurant nearby and then finished the evening at a nearby bar called carpool.  There was an immediate spark :)
3. If married, how long have you been married?

We got married in May of 2006, so almost 6 years ago!

4. If you are married, where did you get married at? Big or small wedding? We got married in Hilton Head at my parents' plantation on the balcony at the clubhouse with the reception inside the clubhouse.  It was pretty small- 54 people.

5. Do you have any nick-names that you call one another? Do share!

We both call each other "Babe".

6. Name 3 things you love most about your honey.

He is very patient, which is the opposite of me.
He is very kind/nice to people, even people he doesn't like (usually they can't tell he doesn't like them, because he's so nice).
He's very smart.  Very math and science oriented and mechanical.  He understands how things work.  I'm not like this, so I really admire that.

7. Tell us how he proposed?

Ha!  As mentioned recently in my Greenville trip post, Greg was going to propose to me in a beautiful park.  The plan was foiled when I came home from work the day before to find my seemingly lazy husband playing Playstation with a pile of dishes in the sink.  Frustrated that he left the house such a mess an argument ensued and it was one of those arguments that dredged up other issues, one of which being that I was kind of tired of waiting for him to propose to me, since we'd been looking a rings for a while, and I was starting to feel like he was never going to actually propose.  Once that was brought up, he produced the ring and told me he was planning on proposing that weekend, but would just do then.  Thus setting the tone for "romance" in our relationship forever...hehe.

8. Is he a flowers and teddy bear kind of guy for v-day, or strawberries, champagne, and rose petals?

Greg is really good with gifts on holidays.  For past Valentine's Days, he's given me a road bike, calla lillies (our wedding flower), cupcakes sent from our local cupcake place when he was away, flowers, chocolate, Bath and Body Works stuff...  He's good.

9. Are you a sunset dinner on the beach kind of girl, or pop a movie in and relax on the couch?

I'm both.

10. Tell us one thing you'd like to do with your significant one day. If you could do anything? Go anywhere?

Go to Europe together.

11. Tell us what you plan on doing on this Valentine's Day.

We actually already celebrated this weekend, since it worked better with our schedules.  We went to Pewter Rose Bistro, where I had pork tenderloin with mac and cheese and asparagus.

12. Are you asking for anything this Valentine's day?

I asked Greg to get my tires rotated for me!  He did it yesterday.  He also got me flowers and a gift card this year.

13. Give us one piece of advice of keeping a relationship strong and full of love.

Have trust.  Especially if your are a pilot's wife.  Be kind to each other.  Try to do things to keep the romance alive, like go on dates, trips, and do thoughtful things for each other.

14. Show us a picture of what love means to you.

I like this one, which is kind of an outtake from our wedding, where everyone else is posed and ready for the camera and Greg and I are in our own little world talking about who knows what :)

Songs to Make You Smile

I went on a quick run tonight for the first time in about a week and a half and covered about 2 miles.  I've had that crappy cold lingering so running with a wad of phlegm in your throat doesn't exactly feel that great (TMI, sorry!) and I've been mostly walking at tonight instead of running.  I didn't wear my Garmin, but I could just tell my pace was pretty slow, which is ok.  Getting started was kind of rough, but eventually I got in to the groove and part of my groove was definitely due to my playlist.  A couple happy songs came on and I realized they were really making a difference in making my run a good one.

I thought I'd share a list of songs that pretty much always get my smiling and are great for a run, a car ride on a sunny day, or if you just need a pick me up.

Do you have any songs that are guaranteed to make you smile?

With that, the rest of my evening involved tacos, heavy on the guac....

And I'm about to go do some snuggling with Clyde while catching up on Glee.

Hiope you guys have a great night!

11 Things

I was recently tagged by Amber, a fellow pilot's wife, to do one of these fun Q&A posts.  Thanks Amber!

The Rules:

Post these rules

You must post 11 random things about yourself

Answer the questions set for you in their post

Create 11 new questions for the people you tag to answer

Go to their blog and tell them you've tagged them

No stuff in the tagging section about you are tagged if you are reading this. You legitimately have to tag 11 people!

Ok, here's my 11 random things.

1.  I recently started watching 19 Kids and Counting, because it's usually on in the morning when I'm getting ready, and even though I think having that many kids is ridiculous, I'm oddly fascinated by the show and can't help but watch.  How can Michelle be SO damn fertile??

2.  I pretty much style my hair the same way every day because it drastically throws off my routine if I try to do anything else.

3.  My closet is a big mess like 95% of the time.  I can't seem to keep it clean.

4.  My childhood bedroom was light blue because that's the color I wanted it.  I wasn't very girly as a kid.

5.  Pledging my sorority (Kappa Delta) was probably the most fun I've ever had.

6.  I dated a guy from New Zealand when I was in high school (he went to my high school).

7.  I was once a baton twirler.  There are videos of my shows and my husband has seen them and made fun of me :)

8.  I am a side sleeper and usually sleep holding a pillow.

9.  I took golf lessons when I was in college, but rarely play.

10.  The first massage I ever had was a few weeks before my wedding.  My husband bought it for me and it was at Popular Springs Inn and Spa.  I think it's still my favorite massage that I've had.

11.  I once had a job for two weeks vacumming dusty library books at Ohio State.  Yuck!

Ok, Amber's questions for me:

1,  If you could have dinner with any one person (dead or alive), who would it be?  My Grandmother.

2. What/who is your favorite band/musician?  Coldplay.  I have tickets to see them again in July.  Can't wait!

3. What is your favorite thing about being a "grown up?"  The freedom to do what I want (within reason).  When I was young, it drove me nuts not to be able to get in a car and go where I wanted, when I wanted, and basically do what I wanted.

4. What is your least favorite thing about being a "grown up?"  Feeling tied down to a job and to certain things in life.  I feel like I can't just pick up and travel the world at random and I feel like most days are essentially the same.

5. Describe your best friend(s).  I kind of have a bunch so this is hard.  My long time best friends are Melanie, my roommate from college, and Jen, my friend that I've known since I was a year old.   Melanie is kind of like me on quieter.  We have a similar sense of humor, taste in clothes, interests, etc...  Jen and I are more different, but we have really long deep discussions and she knows me as well as anyone on earth.

Melanie, Me, Jen

I also have a bunch of really close friends in Charlotte, but we'd be here for a while if I described all of them.  If you read my blog, they pop up on it a lot!

6. Early bird or night owl?  Early bird.  I regularly pass out by 10:30, even on weekends, but I'm consistently up by 6-7am.

7. Do you have a secret talent or just a talent that is unique?  I can touch my tongue to my nose.

8. What is your favorite holiday?  Christmas.  Although I do love St. Patrick's Day also.

9. Have any tattoos? Nope, I probably never will.

10. Why did you start blogging?  I started blogging to vent about my furloughed husband's career, or lack of.  It's become more a journal for me about whatever is going on- marathon training, cooking, trips, TTC...

11. What is your favorite meal?  It's hard to beat lobster.  I don't have it very often, but when I do it's heaven.

For those I'm tagging:

1.  What's your favorite kind of shampoo?
2.  What activities did you participate in in high school (sports, clubs)?
3.  What's the worst injury you've ever had?
4.  What celebrity do you most resemble?
5.  If you could change one thing in your life, what would it be?
6.  Which of your parents are you more like?
7.  Are you close with your siblings?
8.  What snack do get when you go to the movies?
9.  What's your current favorite song?
10.  What's something you struggle with?
11.  Can you play any instruments?

My Christmas List 2011

You all know that the thing I most want for Christmas is this...

Fingers crossed!

In terms of tangible items that I told my family I'd like, here's my list.

Amazon Kindle.  I'm kind of behind the curve on the Kindle, but since I actually did read a lot this year, I think it would be fun to have one.  I am not that familiar with all the differences in the Fire and regular Kindle, but I trust Santa to figure it out.

New running shoes.  My Asics are in desperate need of replacement.  I know a new version has come out since last time I bought some, so I'm hoping for these Asics GT 2160 in the purple color.  Cute, right?

Wire whisk attachment for my Kitchen Aid stand mixer.  My mixed just came with the standard attachment, so this would be a nice alternative and good for whipping things.

Photojojo IPhone lenses.  My husband is skeptical about these, but I think they look really cool and want to try them!

Vegetable Mandolin.  Even, thin slices.  Sign me up!  I just hope I don't lose the tip of my finger...

Pretty camera strap from Etsy.

Camera bag.  I actually asked for a similar one from the same Etsy shop last year.

A nice light box.  I have kind of a crappy one I made and this one seems so much nicer.

That's about it.  Obviously, I'd trade all these objects for a healthy pregnancy, but these would be a fun diversion!  What's your hot ticket, must have item this year?

Things I'm Into Lately

Hi there!  Hope everyone is well.  I've had another busy weekend over here!  I went to see Breaking Dawn Friday night, ran, went to a move party, visited a new brewery in Charlotte, and of course, snuggled the pup lots.  It was nice!  I figured I'd mix things up and give you a rundown of some stuff I'm into lately.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Hot Cocoa

I found this stuff at Target recently and it's awesome.  I still like to drink something warm in the morning, even though I've been off caffeine for a while (because of TTC), so this is a great alternative.

Butternut Squash

It's officially my favorite squash.  I especially love it cubed and roasted or in this soup.

Clyde's boots

Even though he won't keep them all on at once, they are truly adorable!  Here he is with one on...

Chobani Mango

I'm not even a huge fan of mango and this stuff is awesome!
Indian food

I'm totally addicted to Indian food lately.  I've had it out twice in the last week and then made myself some at home tonight.  So good!

Beer

The fall weather has really put me in the mood for beer lately!
I'm bummed that pumpkin beer season is over though :(

Running

Well kind of.  November has been the month with the most consistent running I've done all year since my marathon in January.  I decided to just go for it, since being paranoid about running has gotten me no where with TTC.  I've been running at least 2-3 times a week all month.  And I signed up for a Turkey Trot!

What are you into lately??
